START San Antonio

START | South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics

Here, it is more than a saying. We mean it. The cure STARTS here. And everything about START is focused on one thing – finding a cure for cancer.

South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START) was founded in 2007, and operates under the leadership of Dr. Anthony W. TolcherDr. Amita Patnaik, Dr. Kyriakos P. Papadopoulos and Dr. Drew Rasco. START is located at The START Center for Cancer Care, within the heart of San Antonio’s internationally known South Texas Medical Center. With seven locations throughout San Antonio, the START Center is one of the area’s largest oncology practices.

START consists of a team of highly trained physicians and staff with extensive experience in Phase I clinical trials research and are nationally recognized as thought leaders in cancer research and drug development.

With centers located in San Antonio, Texas and Madrid, Spain, START conducts the world’s largest Phase I medical oncology program – putting more than 400 patients per year on Phase I trials. Patients travel from all over the world to participate in one or more of our Phase I drug trials.

START’s Phase I program is notable not only for its scope, but its structure. Our San Antonio site also houses a preclinical research division, where promising new compounds are identified for further testing. And while START’s preclinical and clinical programs work hand-in-hand, it’s rare to have both components linked together in one facility.
